Minutes of Regular Meeting of Board of Trustees
Bamberg-Ehrhardt Middle School
October 23, 2006
7:30 P. M.
Members present: Chairman Dale Padgett, Vice-chairman John E. Bamberg, Secretary Sheri
Seigler, and Trustee Rita M. Sease.
Absent: Trustee Stacey H. Long
1. Call meeting to order: Chairman Dale Padgett called the meeting to order and
asked the audience to repeat the Lord’s Prayer.
2. Notice to Media: In accordance with the S. C. Code of Laws, Section 30-4-80
(e), as amended, the following have been notified of the time, date, place and agenda of this meeting:

The Advertizer-Herald
3. Approval of Minutes
The minutes of September 25, 2006, were approved as presented.
4. Administering the Oath of Office to Ms. Rita M. Sease, Board Member, Seat 1
Mrs. Janie Johnson, family friend, administered the Oath of Office to Ms. Rita M. Sease.
5. Approval of Policy Manual Revisions (Sections C, D, E and F) - SCSBA
Assistant Superintendent Rick Starr reviewed Sections C, D, E, and F policies that were submitted by South Carolina School Boards Association for the revised policy manual.
Vice-chairman John Bamberg made a motion and Trustee Sheri Seigler seconded to accept Sections C, D, E, and F policies as presented by the South Carolina School Boards Association. The motion passed 4-0.
6. Student/Staff Recognition
Superintendent Schwarting reported the following:
· The Raider Regiment Band won 1st Place in the Lower State Band contest at Midland Valley High School on October 21, and will participate in the State High School Band contest on October 28th at Clinton High School in Clinton, South Carolina.
· The Girls’ Volleyball Team is Region 6A champions. They have a 13-2 record this year and the play-offs are scheduled for October 23, with Bethune-Bowman High School in Bamberg.
· Sylina Brooks has been selected to the Class A All-State Volleyball Team.
· The Girls’ Tennis Team is Region 6A champions. They have a 10-1 record. The first play-off match is scheduled for October 30.
· The Varsity Football Team has a 9-0 record and is Region 6A champions. Their last regular season game will be played on Friday night, October 27, at Denmark-Olar High School. The Play-Offs starts on Friday, November 3rd in Bamberg.
· James Busby has been selected as a member of the South Carolina Shrine Bowl Team.
7. Superintendent’s Report
Superintendent Schwarting stated the following:
· School districts are required by a new state regulation to have STANDING ORDERS approved by a physician in order to administer the over-the-counter (OTC) medications that are used as a necessity in the school setting. Medications currently stocked and used ONLY WITH A SIGNED PARENTAL CONSENT FORM are as follows:
Tylenol (Acetaminophen), Antacid, Chloraseptic spray, Cough syrup, Cough drops, Visine, Antibiotic cream, and Hydrocortisone cream.
The board reviewed and gave verbal approval to allow the administration to send a letter, parental form, and the district’s board policy to surrounding physicians for input. [Board packet enclosures]
· The timeline for the Communication for the Workplace 3 and 4 are being phased out and in 2008-09 will no longer count as credits toward fulfilling the four years of English language arts required for graduation. [Board Packet Enclosure]
· “Comment on Character” newsletter by Mrs. Cindy Hurst was reviewed.
· “It’s Time” newsletter published by the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School Guidance Staff was reviewed. Information on How to take the SAT, College Admissions, Scholarship Information, Scholarships Available, Important Facts to Remember, and Athletic Eligibility was included.
· The “Raider’s Digest” published by the Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School Guidance Staff was reviewed. Articles on Career Clusters, Questions to Consider When Making Career Decisions, Curriculum, and Tips for Successful Academics were included. There are 16 National Career Clusters. Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School has 9 career majors.
· The annual conference of the National School Boards Association will be held in San Francisco on April 14-17, 2006. [Board Packet Enclosure]
8. Monthly Financial Report
Finance Director Devon Furr reported that the finances are normal for this time of the year.
9. Visitors’ Comments
Jerry Durgan, reporter for the Advertizer-Herald Newspaper, commented on how good the information was in the Raider’s Digest Newsletter.
Chairman Dale Padgett welcomed Trustee Rita M. Sease to the board and stated that the board was looking forward to working with her. She can give a unique perspective as a classroom teacher that none of the other board members have.
10. Executive Session
Chairman Dale Padgett called for a motion to enter Executive Session. Trustee Sheri Seigler made a motion and Vice-chairman John Bamberg seconded to enter Executive
Session. The motion carried (4-0). The purpose for entering executive session was to discuss:

Open session: Chairman Dale Padgett declared the board out of Executive Session.
A. Employment Recommendation
Vice-chairman John Bamberg made a motion and Trustee Sheri Seigler seconded to accept, with regrets, the resignation of Ms. Lindell Nimmons, paraprofessional aide, effective October 31, 2006. The motion passed 4-0.
With no other business before the board, the chairman adjourned the meeting at 8:40 p. m.
